Why I Love to Sew
People often ask me why I love to sew. I never really gave it much thought but after a friend asked me this question I gave it some thought and here’s what I came up with! While sewing can be challenging depending on the project, it can also be simplistic and relaxing. Sewing gives me something positive to focus on and takes me away from all the noise going on in the world.
There are times when I really enjoy sewing in solitude but at other times I have a lot of fun getting together with my sewing friends, attending classes, sharing ideas and shopping for fabrics and sewing notions. Sewing is something that my sister and I have in common and we really enjoy working on projects together. Aside from the actual stitching, I enjoy the whole creative process of selecting fabrics, color palettes, patterns, threads and all the other goodies needed for my projects. Sewing also gives me a good reason to collect books. I have a small collection of books and I enjoy browsing through them for inspiration.
Making something that brings comfort to others means a lot to me. I participate in a a couple of charity quilting groups and this allows me to give back to the community. The groups also provide ways for me to try out a variety of designs, learn new techniques and get out of my comfort zone. You can read more about how I give back on my blog post about How to Be a Quilt Volunteer. One group that i’ve been part of for a long time is do.good stitches. In this group i’m both a piecer and a long arm quilter for the group.
Another reason why i love to sew is because of my long arm machine. I enjoy help other quilters put the finishing touches on their quilts.
My creative energy can be scattered at times. Now and then I will dabble in painting, drawing, pottery and DIY projects but no matter what, I always find myself returning to some form of stitching. Sewing is simply something that I enjoy.
How about you, why do you sew?
